Ultrasound

Ultrasound therapy can relax and soften tense, sore muscles as well as heat the muscle fibres increasing circulation and aiding recovery.

Ultrasound can be used in all 3 stages of recovery:

Acute = up to 3 days but depends on the seriousness of the injury
Subacute = up to 3 weeks
Chronic = over 3 weeks

The ultrasound energy has 2 main physiological effects:

1. Thermal Effects:
- Blood flow and metabolism increased
- Extensibility of scar tissue and adhesions
- Pain reduction

2. Mechanical Effects:
- Blood flow and metabolism increased
- Increased fluid and gas exchange
- Increased cell permeability
- Extensibility of scar tissue and adhesions
- Pain reduction

Therapeutic Benefits of Ultrasound:

- Reduce inflammation
- Reduce pain
- Reduce muscle spasm
- Increase in repair process
- Softening of scar tissue
